For those of you who are not slacking, keep up the good work!! Your 1st marking period average reflects many things - being prepared for class, being in class, actively participating (which you can't do if you're absent!), not disrupting the learning process of others, doing your homework, passing quizzes & tests...all things you already know.
For those of you who thought you would get away with not doing the above...you didn't. You can't fail two marking periods and pass for the year, so I recommend you change your ways and fix your mistakes based on the list above. You can recover from one failed marking period, so you're still in shape to pass for the year. The time to screw up, not do work, or think things will magically work out differently if you do exactly the same thing is over. The best definition of insanity I know is "repeating the same action and expecting a different result." Trust me on this one, you will get the same result from the same actions on your next report card. Monday starts the new marking period. Start anew with it!
Every student in every course has always been required to have the following in class: standard blue or black working pens (2 or more), a working highlighter, a binder with plenty of paper OR a notebook dedicated to my class AND a folder for your handouts. Binders & notebooks are required to be orderly, organized, and easy for you to follow. I smell notebook checks coming up, unannounced (and a test grade), based on what I've seen in class the last few weeks. Be prepared. Literally.
Remember, you are losing points when you are unprepared for class. There is no excuse for continually being unprepared.
Enjoy your extra day off, and remember why it's a day off.
In fact, there's some extra credit for you...hand write me a 1-2 page paper on the meaning of Veteran's Day (it's origin, why was Nov. 11th picked for it, who does it honor, etc.) Due Tuesday at the beginning of your class period. See you then!

I hope you're well!
Hi Students & Parents ~
I hope you & your loved ones made it safely through the storm without any major damage.
Some updates as we head into an unprecedented 6th day of school being closed:
- All HW that was/is due through Monday is due the first day back. This is true of ALL work due through however many days we remain closed.
- All quizzes & tests are POSTPONED. Vocab quizzes would not normally be postponed under these conditions, but since I asked for the copies to be done during last week there's no way we'll have them back on the first we resume classes.
- Any extra credit due 11/1 will be accepted on the first day back. It will not be accepted after that.
- You current HW will count for the current marking period (1st), so make sure you get it done. We would usually be entering report card grades starting tomorrow, but that's obviously something we aren't dealing with at this time.
- Regardless of the subject, all students should be watching election news and shows relating to it. The majority of you will be old enough to vote in the next Presidential Election, so you should get used to seeing through the usual "campaign nonsense" and discovering facts & what's important to you as you enter adulthood. Everyone around you is an influence, but only you can & should be making your decision - and it should always be based on facts. No time like a week away from school to dive into it and do some reading, watching, & listening to practice that skill!
Stay safe! See you when we get back, and I hope your power stays on! (Mine has gone off twice since it was restored this weekend.)
~ Mrs. Ramo
PARENTS: If you made an appointment for Tuesday & are unable to keep it, please try to leave a message for me releasing that time slot to another parent early Tuesday morning (or send an email to dramo@bufsd.org.) This is assuming you are able to contact the school, we have school, &/or the district follows the lead of others and holds classes instead of conferences Tuesday.
I hope you & your loved ones made it safely through the storm without any major damage.

Stay Safe & More Updates
If you didn't already get the call, school is also closed tomorrow, Tuesday 10/30.
All work due tomorrow will be due Wednesday upon our return to school (because I simply cannot imagine we'll be closed for a 3rd day, but I guess "never say never.")
While many of you may be excited over another day off, keep in mind that there are many people who had to leave their homes and may suffer significant loses due to the storm. Please take a moment to think of them before celebrating another day off.
I will see you Wednesday...I hope.
PS - In the past Mr. Loeschner has allowed costumes to be worn at school (this was not allowed for many years.) here are some general rules to follow should you decide to dress for Halloween to come to school. Keep in mind that you can (& likely will) be sent home if you violate any of these items:
1. Dress codes still apply. Nothing too low cut, too high cut, missing pieces of clothing in "strategic areas," and nothing sheer. Same dress code rules apply to costumes as all other school outfits.
2. You must be able to sit in your desk as you would any other day, and you re must not impede the view of those behind you.
3. You must be able to get to classes on time.
4. Violence-themed is not allowed. Ditto for "props."
5. Masks and face paint are not allowed. The general rule with make-up is "if ti disguises who you are you can't wear it."
I hope this is helpful as you make your wardrobe choice for Wednesday!

Homework & School Closings
By now you have received the call that we are closed tomorrow. First and foremost, stay safe.
Homework that WAS due tomorrow is due TUESDAY, ALONG WITH the work ALREADY DUE Tuesday. Any quizzes scheduled for Tuesday will STILL BE GIVEN on Tuesday.
US History students - Castle Learning has some issues so your test is still not activated. Once up, you'll see it. As I said in class, due dates will be extended. I am not posting dates at this time just in case we lose power. Last time mine was out for 7 days. Let's see what happens this time.

Extra Credit - ALL Subjects
It's been quite a week - 2 tragic deaths, 2 funerals, "my" wedding anniversary, and my birthday all rolled into one very busy 8 days. No time to post extra credit this week, but time is also short on the marking period. As a result of my lack of time, here is one final extra credit for the marking period, due Thursday, 11/1. Find your class subject to find your assignment.
------------------------------
I was very lucky to have Gram. She was my great-grandmother and lived until the end of March of my Senior year of HS. She was in her late 90s. She was the only living grandparent who took a true interest in any of us kids, and I was the oldest. That means I got a lot of her time as well as became the closest great-grand kid to her.
Throughout her life Gram told me stories of HER life - as a kid, as a teenager, as an adult. The time I spent with her was filled with these stories - her father's line-of-duty death at the turn of the (last) century (he was NYPD in the 1800s until his death in 1904); living on Columbus Circle in Manhattan during the 1900s & 1910s; experiencing the "American melting pot" first-hand; working in a factory during the latter years of the Industrial Revolution and hating it; getting a job at Western Union to help support her family; watching a husband of 6 months go off to war (WWI) only to come home and die of the "Spanish Flu" he caught in the trenches of the Western Front; to watch a second husband almost get called into WWII...and so much more.
Gram taught me history. Not from a book, not from TV, but from her life. It wasn't history to HER, it was HER LIFE EXPERIENCES. In the end, that's all history really is - the experiences of those who have come before us. What did I learn? Three things. 1. Gram was an amazing woman well ahead of her time, all the time. 2. That Morse code she taught me...it helped me talk to her under the table at Sunday dinners so no one else could "hear" us. It was awesome. :) 3. History was not boring at all. You just have to think of it as one big story with lots of plots, twists, characters, protagonists, and antagonists...like any good book.
ASSIGNMENT #1 (ALL SUBJECTS):
Are you lucky enough to have a "Gram" in your life? If so, what has this special person taught YOU about history? ANY period of history that they have first-hand knowledge or family history passed down to them about counts. Write a 1-3 page paper about what they have taught you about history. Haven't thought about doing this before with a grandparent or great-grandparent? Now is the perfect time. They'll probably be thrilled you asked. :) Remember, this must be handwritten.
ASSIGNMENT #2 (US HISTORY)
Gettysburg & Antietam were turning points in during the Civil War. Pick one and write a 2-4 page paper including the following: state, date of battle, causes of battle, details about the battle, who "won" the battle, and the results of the battle. Remember, this must be handwritten. Typed assignments will not be accepted. Don't copy & paste from books or websites - I am very familiar with resources regarding these battles so will know if you copied from somewhere. :)
ASSIGNMENT #2 (GLOBAL II)
The Industrial Revolution was a turning point in World History. Pick four inventions created during this time period and write a 2-4 page paper (for all combined, not for each!) including the following: inventor, date invented, when first used, why it was invented, how it affected factories, people, or businesses, how did it affect society. Remember, this must be handwritten. Typed assignments will not be accepted. Don't copy & paste from books or websites - I know if you copied from somewhere. :)
ASSIGNMENT #2 (GLOBAL I)
Ancient Greece had a major impact on World History, especially Athens & Sparta. Write a 2-4 page paper that compares Athens & Sparta, including the following: type of government used, art, culture, military, slavery, social classes, role & rights of women, & citizenship. Remember, this must be handwritten. Typed assignments will not be accepted. Don't copy & paste from books or websites - I know if you copied from somewhere. :)
And yes, you-know-who...you CAN do both. :) Yes, you. You know who you are. :)
