If you've been watching the Olympics at all, here is a good reference point for you to use as we continue to study the USSR this week:
ORANGE
is the Ukraine (where we studied about
Stalin’s man-made famine & human rights violation)
YELLOW is Russia. Note how close Sochi is to the Crimean
Peninsula (that warm-water port I keep repeating in class)
Also, if you watched the Opening Ceremonies Friday night you should have caught the part about the Russian Revolution & the Five Year Plans (though they never actually said those titles or the names "Lenin" or "Stalin." No surprise there...) The part where they were all in red & black - the "nameless, faceless masses" I told you about - YOU as an individual didn't matter...that was the representation there. The steel & such - that was the industrial progress under the Five Year Plans. No surprise again that the focus was only on the positive.
