Parents: Meet the Teacher Night is Monday, 10/1!

Greetings Parents & Guardians!

I hope your student has told you about Meet the Teacher Night!  It is this Monday, October 1st, from 6-9 pm.  There is a brief "assembly," after which parents will follow their student's schedule and meet "as a class" with teachers.  If you have been to Meet the Teacher nights at the HS in the past, this is a radical change.  We'll be giving you a brief overview of our courses and expectations and, hopefully, answer all of your general questions.  If you have more than one student at the HS, decide before arriving which adult will follow each student's schedule - advance planning may make things quick & easy for you!

Unlike the past format, we will not be able to meet with you for that 5 minute appointment to give you some quick feedback about your student's individual progress.  There are some appointments available for Election Day, but since time is limited and appointments end around 11:15 am, you'll want to be sure to make a timed appointment with your student's teachers while at Meet the Teacher night to ensure getting to see the teacher's you want to speak with on November 6th.

Since most teachers will ask you to fill out a general contact card, I recommend having a pen or two with you.

I look forward to meeting you on the 1st!

~ D. Ramo

PS - Wear comfy shoes...especially if your student travels back and forth between Ross & Sonderling!

Overlaps & Reminders!

Hi there!

There is an overlap of Global II & US History extra credit until this Thursday, when 1 for each class will expire.  If you have been doing your homework but want that extra push for your average, this is the best way to do it.

Remember - "extra credit" does not mean "in lieu of work you failed to do."  "Extra" is just that - work you are not required to do but can do if you choose to boost your grade.  If you are not doing your homework you have significantly lowered your average already - so get moving, get your homework done, and make yourself eligible for extra credit!  I won't accept extra credit for a homework chapter/packet unless you have done all of the assignments (including the test review sheet.)

Oh, and if you needed the "extra" push...progress reports open up for teacher comments on Monday.  That's right, THIS Monday.  That means report cards are just 5 weeks away, and Quarterlies are a mere 3 weeks away.

Enjoy the holiday to those observing, and a good day off to the rest of you.  See you Thursday...with your homework!

~ Mrs. Ramo

TEST TODAY!!

Only work done in the proper format will receive full credit.  Work not done as directed may receive partial credit or no credit at all.  If you do not do your homework, you will fail the marking period even if you have good quiz & test grades.  Consult your Expectations letter for weights and percentages of each category.

If you are legally absent from class your homework is expected on your first day back, including all work already scheduled to be due that day or it will be considered late.  Late work may not be accepted, and work that is accepted will be for a maximum of half credit (so no higher than a 50.)  If you cut class, you cannot turn in your homework, you get an automatic zero on anything due that day.

Want to pass?  Show up, on time, every day, prepared.  Behave.  Participate in a positive and effective manner.  Do all homework and classwork.  Study for all tests & quizzes.  Stay for extra help as needed.  It’s really that simple.

Reminders!

Use your notes, classwork, and online textbook to complete your homework.

For the student who asked where Galileo's trial was held!

I apologize for not remembering who asked me this question today, but I did at least remember that someone asked (hey, at my age, that's something!)  :)  Here are a few photos & info on the church, which is the Santa Maria sopra Minerva.  It is right next to the Pantheon.  The actual room was unavailable, but this is the building.  These are my own photos but I did not write the information at the bottom of this post.  Enjoy!

This is the outside of the church.  Very plain.  That obleisk you see above the elephant is from Ancient Egypt and yes, it has hieroglyphics on it!  The elephant is also special - it was created by Bernini, a famous artist who worked almost exclusively for the church during his lifetime.  Have you read the book or seen the movie "Angels & Demons?"  He is the same Bernini they frequently talk about.

Notice how high those ceilings are - compare it to the pews.  They are normal size pews/benches/chairs!

Imagine my surprise to walk into a church in Rome a lot of people don't visit...and find out there's a Michelangelo there!  You can't imagine how shocked & excited I was, but that's one of the great things about churches & art in Rome - you never know what treasures you'll see!

If I remember correctly this is St. Victoria, but that's all I know.  I liked the creepy fake skeleton head propped up & smiling so I took a picture.  That shouldn't surprise you by now. :)

You know who else is (mostly) buried here?  St. Catherine of Siena, the patron saint of nurses (among other groups) & one of the two patron saints of Italy.  It also shouldn't surprise you that I do my homework about a location so I know what I want to see - but I didn't know about St. Catherine being (mostly) buried here before I saw her.  (By the way, the "mostly" is because her body is buried here...but her head is buried in Siena.  Yup, they cut off her head and buried it somewhere else.  This was pretty common back then when famous or important people died.  Kind of gross?  You decide!)

Here's some more information regarding Galileo & Santa Maria sopra Minerva:
The only Gothic church in Rome, the Basilica Santa Maria sopra Minerva is so named because it was built directly on the foundations of a temple to Minerva, the goddess of wisdom. The basilica that stands today was begun in 1280. Architectural changes and redecorations in the 1500s and 1900s stripped it of some of its magnificence, but it still includes an awe-inspiring collection of medieval and Renaissance tombs.

It was in the Dominican monastery adjoining the church that the astronomer Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) was tried by the Inquisition for teaching that the Earth revolved around the Sun.
