Global II: Thematic & DBQ





The test was as expected. 


The multiple choice was the same info but worded differently, there were more non-European questions, the documents were much easier than I expected.


That said, if you wrote about Nelson Mandela in the Thematic Essay and said he ended apartheid, you are in for some trouble.  I must have said 200 times that F.W. DeKLERK ended apartheid, and kids always get it wrong, so STAY AWAY from Mandela on essays.  Same for Hitler.  This was a PERFECT essay for Stalin & the Ayatollah, like I kept telling you to study & do! 




We might have grades by next Thursday.  Do not email me before then or I will ignore all of your emails.

Global II: This is it!


This is it.


  • Go to bed by 9, no electronics.
  • Get up ON TIME.
  • Don't miss the bus.
  • Don't be late.
  • Remember your penS, ID, & seat #.
  • Eat breakfast (and I don't mean cookies.)
  • Study time is over.  You did or you did not, it isn't a "cram test" so "it is what it is" (as Mr. Ramo likes to say.)


 
Remember the plan:
5 min: box out (outline) Thematic
5 min: box out (outline) DBQ (without reading documents)
50 min: Multiple Choice (on BOCES Sheet, not in booklet)
20 min: Do Documents (directly in Regents booklet)
5 min: Finish DBQ outline
45 min: Write DBQ essay
50 min: Write Thematic essay


I will walk up & down reminding you of this as time elapses.
 

US History: Uh oh...

As a side note to today's exam, my Dad was soooo mad Betty Friedan was part of the essay!  :)


If you were in one of the classes that heard my college graduation story, you know why he was so mad!  If you remember, I told you "don't write about this on the Regents!"  Prophetic, right?  ;)


Here's another tip...if you wrote about Brown v. Board of Ed you are in trouble on that Thematic Essay.  Big and bolded after the suggested list it stated you could NOT use that case.  I guess it was too close to the civil rights stuff they had in the documents.  I warned you they did it with Global a few years back...


The test was as expected.  The multiple choice was the same info but worded differently, the documents were much easier than I expected, I told you to learn some cases and the background of them (like Plessy & train cars in LA & deliberately violating Jim Crow to get the case heard...and if you wrote Plessy but not that you have another potentially big problem on your hands.)  I kept saying Reform Movements & Cases, and that's what you pretty much got. 


We talked a lot about the connections between women's rights & the Civil Rights movement, so I hope you remembered stuff that wasn't in the documents & made the connection.


We might have grades by Tuesday.  Do not email me before then or I will ignore all of your emails.

Reminder for ALL

Reminder!!!


Reviews for both courses are on Wednesdays & Thursdays, see the May post regarding times & locations.  This is, obviously, the last week.


Otherwise, you are not to be with other teachers unless you have their prior permission to be there.  They are busy on their free time getting their own kids ready for the Regents.  There are teachers getting paid to help "everyone" and they should be your first choice on those days.


If you want to make sure you have review this week, be sure enough of your classmates sign up so it isn't canceled again.

All Students: Essay Review

Haven't taken the initiative to prepare Thematic Essays for yourself as I have been suggesting every day for the last 5 weeks?  You have a week until your exam, so I'd get moving.  My best recommendation at this point is to watch a whole lot of USEFUL YouTube videos.


Start with Hip Hughes, he does both subjects.  Scroll until you find a theme, essay, or topic that I have repeatedly told you to know and watch it.  Take notes.  Create an outline for yourself.


Or don't...but the consequence of that will be sitting right here again next year, hearing the same exact speech...

Final Exams are mandatory.  You are required to be in class, on time, prepared as if it were any other class day.  Failure to do so will lead to a zero as your grade for this meeting.

Regents Review Homework Make-Ups - Read This!

This is your one final chance to turn in any Regents Review work that was late, incomplete, or not done in accordance with the directions you were given. 


All regents Review homework due through today has been graded & entered into Engrade.  If you have anything other than a grade of 100, it is for one of the following reasons:
    - you didn't bother to do it
    - you tried to turn it in late
    - you turned it in incomplete
    - you did not follow the directions


I will allow you to make up this work only as described above - here are the details & conditions (& if you do not follow them I will not count any work you resubmit):
1.  All work must be re-written.  If you turn in the same work and just "fix it" you will get no credit.
2.  I have all the work submitted to me that falls under the last 3 points above.  You may pick it up before 1st period tomorrow.  I will not deal with the paperwork after 7:30 AM tomorrow.
3.  If re-submitted on time & all directions (these & the original ones) have been followed, you will receive half credit for that work.  If not, you will get nothing.
4.  Please don't ask me "what did I do wrong" after 10 months of requiring you to follow the same homework procedure.  I will not answer that question any longer.  Ask a friend.  Re-read the directions.  Look back over your homework sheets since September.  Nothing has changed.  Nothing.
5.  US HISTORY: This applies only to work due Thursday, 6/5 & earlier.  There will be no make-ups allowed for anything die tomorrow, 6/6, or later.  Don't follow the directions, get no credit.  Period.
6.  If you cut class on a due date, you cannot make up that work.  No exceptions.  Claim you didn't cut?  it's on YOU to prove it through official attendance records.  I'm not looking it up for you.


You will receive half credit for work re-submitted - here are the details:
    - No credit will be given if the directions are ignored
    - No credit will be given for incomplete work
    - Once the bell starting 1st period rings on Monday, the deadline has   expired.  No work will be accepted after that bell. 
    - All work must be given to me, personally.  Work put n my box will not be accepted. 
    - If you are absent on Monday you lose this opportunity.  I will not take your work from another student.


DEADLINE: Before 1st period on Monday, June 9th.  This is a firm deadline.  It will not be extended.  I don't have to give you this opportunity to begin with, so I'm not flexible on this AT ALL.


Come to 2534 before 1st period tomorrow to pick up your work if you want to.  You can only get your own unless I receive an email before 7 AM tomorrow morning at dramo@bufsd.org.

No Friday Review this Week - based on Your Lack of Sign Ups

This is the worst lack of motivation for Regents Review I have seen in my 15 years at Brentwood.  As a result, for the first time ever, I am canceling Friday's review.


I have 150 of you, and 12 are signed up out of the 60 spots I have open.


I'm not having review.  If you don't care enough to come, I am happy to join my family & not miss another Friday night with them.


A warning:
I will put up a sign up for next Friday soon.  If both Global & US aren't at least 3/4 full, I will cancel all remaining reviews.  If they are, those students will be able to sign up for "the night before" review (Monday the 17th.)  No first time review attendees will be allowed to sign up for Monday.

Review may be canceled...

Unless more people sign up for review tomorrow, I am canceling them - both of them.  If you intend to sign up, tomorrow is your last chance before I cancel Friday completely.  Once that happens, I may decide to cancel all remaining reviews & take back that time to spend with my family.


This applies to both US & Global Reviews.  They should be FULL since I have far fewer seats open for each course than I have students.


Carpool together, arrange your rides tonight, and get yourself signed up.  Worse than not going to review is failing the Regents, and that's a serious possibility for a lot of you in BOTH courses.

Please remember that all remaining Regents Review sessions REQUIRE a parent pick up at 6:45.  Students will be removed from the building by 7 PM if not picked up.  Should that occur, that student will not be allowed to attend any further reviews with me.
